The World Is Good

Tonight I went to a hot yoga class and did some thinking. A few days after my first blog post went public, I went to eat dinner at a friends house. All week long I had received so much positivity, feedback and love from so many beautiful people. However on this night, I received a response I wasn’t quite prepared for. I asked my friend if he had gotten a chance to check out my blog and he replied “No, I don’t read blogs.” This began a bit of a quarrel when he finally said, “I don’t have to read it to support it, I don’t see the point because I don’t care what other people have to say.” I knew he wasn’t trying to be offensive, he was actually wondering why what I have to say is any more valid than what anyone else has to say. His words sat with me all week long. In the matter of minutes I had lost all excitement and motivation to continue the blog because I was in disbelief that I couldn’t come up with a good enough reason to get a good friend of mine to read it. I’m normally very accepting of criticism but this was different, he wasn’t disapproving my post he was questioning the purpose of it all.

In the midst of some serious sun salutations in a 103 degree room, I began to seek clarity. I realized exactly why I’ve wanted to start a blog for so long. For one, I’m a pretty decent writer. Not that I’m some grammar guru or a walking thesaurus, but because I know how to put my thoughts into words. I’ve kept a journal ever since I can remember and when you practice something enough, you eventually get good at it. More importantly though, I think differently than a lot of the people I’ve met. My dad, Adam B, is an absolute legend, my biggest inspiration–everyone’s biggest inspiration. Not only is he the kind of guy that walks into a room and lights the whole place up, he lights the whole damn city up. And let’s face it, growing up with Mr. Positive taught me a thing or two about how to do the same. I can’t give him all the credit though, my mom, my sisters, my brother, my friends, and each and every one of you continue to define and redefine what it means to be a good person, and seek the brighter things in life. So perhaps I’m a little weird or nerdy or insane at times, but there is depth and beauty in the way I see the world and if I have any chance of impacting this universe, a blog, for me, is simply the best way to start. Besides, with all the negativity that’s portrayed on the media and news, it’s nice to take a breath of fresh air and hear some positive thoughts about this incredible world. But I digress…

This morning my car wouldn’t turn on because the battery died. So I had to walk a mile or so to my class in order to take my advertising exam. I didn’t have time for a cup of coffee, I had sweat all over my body as a reaction to the burning summer heat, and in return I received a 70 on the test. When I got home my roommate helped jump start my car but I needed to go straight to the gas station to fill up, so low and behold, it died again. I stretched my body out on the top of my trunk hoping to experience some kind of relief but my skin was searing so I called my friend Val to rescue me. We began putting the jumper cables on her car–black on negative, red on positive–when two young men came up to us on skateboards asking if we needed any help. I told them “I think we got it,” but they stood by to make sure we actually did. My car finally started and before we could thank them properly, they had already skated down the hill. Another man passing by asked if we needed assistance and another in a car as he drove by. That’s four gentleman in span of 10 minutes that stopped for a second to make sure two young ladies were okay. Chivalry is not dead, friends, and don’t let anyone make you believe that it is. I completely forgot about my stressful morning because their graciousness was so tasteful and reminded me why the world is good.

After the gas station I went to get my car fixed at the shop. Apparently my motor needs to be re-mounted and a whole bunch of other bologna that was going to cost me $1000. Yes that’s three zeros. Three. At the end of the evaluation, since there was no way I could afford to get it repaired, they guy told me I owed them $35 for the inspection. I looked at him and said “Sir, I’m a loyal customer and have been coming here for years but I am a broke college student and am not even close to being able to afford this repair,” and before I could finish my speech he said “this one’s on us.”  If there’s anything I’ve learned in life it’s this: If you ask you shall receive. Of course there are times where you might be turned down, but that doesn’t mean you should ever stop asking. You’d be surprised at the amount of people willing to make your day if only you’d let them.

So as you can imagine I’ve had quite a whirlwind of a day but I did learn some valuable lessons. First off, never let ANYONE dim your light. I wasted so much energy parading around my mind with irrational thoughts just because of something one person said. If you’re passionate about something put you’re whole fuckin’ heart into it and never let the opinions of others steer you away from your dream. Second, gentleman exist and gentleman are important. So important.  Third, if you’re a good person and you ask a favor, chances are people are going to feel your vibes and return the positivity. Never be afraid to inquire. And lastly, hot yoga is heaven and I feel like an angel and if you want to feel like an angel too, then I highly suggest taking a class.

I want to give a huge THANK YOU to everyone that tuned into Good Vibes Studio last week. I received an outpour of advice, love and positivity from so many incredible people! I am truly inspired, and for that I truly appreciate all of you so much for participating in the good vibes movement.

Until next time ~

Nina

  1. I hope you never let anyone get you down or deter you from writing! Your blog brings a huge smile to my face and I know I can’t be the only one.
